The library will be closed until September, 2019

As you may know, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners agreed to spend $1.8 million dollars from the renovation contingency fund to literally raise the roof of the library.  The Commission has declined to revisit their decision, as we had requested.  As feared, this will likely extend the closure of our Roswell Library by an additional six months, until at least September 2019.

Representatives of the Friends of the Roswell Library attended the Board of Commissioners meeting on 10/3 to request that plans remain as they were initially approved by the community.  These initial plans included a sidewalk to a new entrance on Norcross Street, a porch with seating, additional landscaping, new restrooms, additional computer space and a general redesign of the patron areas.

The extended renovation period and additional cost is solely associated with the higher roofline and new façade. The request, made by the Roswell Downtown Development Authority, the Roswell Historic Preservation Commission, and several unnamed members of the Roswell City Council, was championed by County Commissioner Liz Hausmann.

Commission Vice Chair Bob Ellis, whose district encompasses the library, voted against the proposal on 9/19.  Then on 10/3, he asked the Commission for an additional public hearing to allow citizens to offer their input.  That motion failed.

At this point the Friends have no additional leverage with the County Board of Commissioners.  However, if you are so inclined, you might write the Roswell Mayor and City Council ( to protest their unpublicized meetings and decision.

Many programs will continue, and the search for additional locations is underway. Information will be posted on this website as it is available.

During this time, please visit the following libraries and send your “holds” to one of them.

  • East Roswell Library, 2301 Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell 404.613.4050

  • Alpharetta Library, 10 Park Plaza, Alpharetta 404.613.6735

  • Milton Library, 855 Mayfield Rd., Milton 404.613.4402

If you visit the libraries, you may see some familiar faces: the Roswell librarians and staff have been temporarily reassigned to one of the branches to assist with their additional work load.
